Canada is now accepting online Citizenship Applications

The new online application is currently only available to single applicants. The portal will be opened to families later this year.

Permanent Canadian residents can now apply for citizenship online.

Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) have launched a new online tool that allows you to apply for citizenship online.

As of August 11, the IRCC opened an online portal for single applicants over the age of 18. It is not open to family applications or representatives. It is also not available to those employed by the Crown and living outside of Canada.

Later in 2020, the IRCC intends to open an online application for families and minors under 18 years of age. In 2022, the web application will be available to representatives to submit applications on behalf of their clients. It will also be open to Crown officials declaring a stay outside of Canada.

Applicants who have already submitted their documents on paper should not try to re-submit their applications online, says the IRCC in a press release.

The IRCC is already developing this new tool as part of its immigration modernization initiative. At the end of 2020, he released a platform performance testing tool.

The new web portal allows applicants to save partially completed applications and resume them at a later time. It also allows users to upload supporting documents, proof of payment, print a PDF and request a receipt.

Modernization of the immigration system

Canada Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino set out his vision for Canada's immigration system to end paperwork.

The pandemic has forced the IRCC to start modernization to allow immigration to continue as part of public health measures. So far, Canada has made available online citizenship tests and has also started hosting virtual citizenship ceremonies.

In addition to other industries, the department has also started virtual landings for newly arrived permanent residents. Many paper-based programs are becoming digital for immigration applicants.
