New Open Work Permit for PGWP holder

Former International students who are currently residing in Canada and are on the verge of an expiring work permit can now apply for a new work permit under the newly implemented public policy.

There is an implementation of a new policy that allows former international students to apply for a new open work permit if the previous work permit is about to expire.

Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) have just announced that they are now open to accepting new open work permit if the applicant’s Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) has expired or about to expire.

This new open work permit will then be valid for a period of 18 months.

The benefits of this work permit are having to extend their stay in Canada in order to continue looking for work. The other benefit of having an open work permit is that the applicant is not bounded by a single employer like that in an employer-specific work permit. This work permit gives you the flexibility of finding work from an employer as per caliber and domain.

The requirements for applying to this work permit under the new policy are stated below:

  1. Must have a PGWP that is expiring on or after 30th January 2020 or the applicant is having a PGWP that is going to expire in 4 months or less from the date of application.

  2. Valid passport status or have applied to restore the status of the passport.

  3. The online application is open till the date of 27 July 2021 starting from 27 January 2021.

The PGWP is an effort made by IRCC to attract international students and retain them as skilled workers. Students who have pursued their graduation from Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) are also eligible for a PGWP for up to 3 years.

Once the applicant gets the PGWP, they are eligible to work with any employer anywhere in Canada. After attaining work experience over the years, they can also move forward towards the immigration process and apply for permanent residency as well.

As we all know that the Canadian Immigration department always had a preference for skilled workers that are having Canadian work experience. Programs like Express Entry Program, Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), Quebec Experience Program, and some other pathways give a lot of attention to the Canadian work experience. For example, Express Entry gives additional Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) scores for studying in Canada and working in Canada.

Candidates who are having very little and no working experience, by having Canadian working experience and integrating with the Canadian Labour market can be the deciding factor in deciding whether the applicant is eligible for a permanent residency visa under the various Canadian Immigration programs.

The students who are willing to permanently in Canada can actually put their faith in PGWP if they are adamant to achieve their goal of a Permanent Residency (PR) visa.

The Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) have a limited time duration validity. This means that the applicant must be vigilant and active in order to grasp all the benefits of this work permit. This pandemic already had put a drawback for the recently graduated students as compared to previously graduated students because of the weaker labour market.

As per the statistics, a large number of international students have not been able to secure work, their hours being reduced or even laid of s well. This new policy by the Canadian Government is an attempt to make amendments and offset the drawback incurred due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

These new changes are in line with the series of policies introduced by IRCC in past recent months for the purpose of addressing the excruciating concerns about the decrease in the number of international students who have been able to work, study, and stay in Canada since the starting of COVID-19 pandemic.

The immigration department of Canada has already put a lot of emphasis on international students putting them on the top priority list for immigrants. They are considered as an important workforce that capable of meeting the Canadian labour market needs in sectors like healthcare and technology. They ensure steady growth for the social and economic situation of Canada.
