Business Leaders In Canada Demanding to Open Border

Canadian leading business owners are pressuring the government to reopen the economy and borders immediately.

The federal government of Canada is being put on a spot and is being urged to come up with a plan to open the economy and international borders.

On the day of June 14, the federal government was asked to release a comprehensive plan towards opening the borders immediately by the Canadian Travel and Tourism Roundtable. As of now, there is no official announcement of the comprehensive plan for international travels, particularly with the case of fully vaccinated foreign nationals willing to come to Canada.

The first travel restrictions were placed by Canada in March 2020, ever since they have renewed these restrictions about every month. As of now, the restrictions are still in place till June 21.

In the G7 Summit, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau along with some of the leaders of the world’s richest countries agreed that there should be some common standards regarding travel. Canada was the only country to enter the G7 summit without a comprehensive reopening plan.

The U.S. President Joe Biden and Justin had a talk at the summit about reopening the borders but there was nothing certain.

Canada is one of the leading countries in the number of single doses of the coronavirus vaccine. Till June 5, about 70% of the Canadian population over the age of 12 has already received at least one dose of the vaccine. As per the roundtable experts, there is an agreement that the borders should be reopened on the basis of science. There is an argument that as per science there is no logical explanation for delaying the implementation of the government’s own Expert Panel recommendation.

Earlier this June, there was the advice given to the federal government to start easing the quarantine restrictions by the COVID-19 Testing and Screening Expert Advisory.

In the last week, the public health department of Canada made an announcement about its intentions towards removing the mandatory hotel quarantine rule. They have also mentioned reducing the quarantine upon receiving test reports. The business owners of Canada is not agreeing with this approach.

The Travel and Tourism industry of Canada and the Canada-U.S. borders have been closed effective from March 2020. There is a need for a holistic Canada-wide plan to provide certainty to Canadians and businesses. Travel and Tourism is a billion worth industry currently estimated at around $105 billion dollars. This is a sector that accounts for around 2% of the gross domestic product and employs millions of candidates.

As per the president of the National Airline Council of Canada, the countries that have moved forward towards the reopen plans based on science and data-based testing and quarantine policy will not only protect public health but will also be able to drive overall domestic recovery.

All these indications of the summit and the public announcement tell us that Canada is more than willing to reopen the borders and ease travel restrictions. They are willing to fill the gaps in immigrations and jobs that have been created due to this pandemic. In the future, we will see that everything goes back to normal as they were earlier.
